From student to stage to workbench
One thread runs through everything at Sri's Lab: more than 16 years with the mridangam first as a student, then as a performer, and now at the repair bench.
The learning journey
Srivatsan Mukunthraj is a New England based mridangam artist. He began his musical journey at an early age of seven and has undergone over sixteen years of dedicated training in the art of mridangam. He initially received guidance from Vidwans T.S. Chandrasekar and Sudarshan Chakravarthy, and is a senior disciple of Vidwan Dr. Pravin Sitaram. He is currently undergoing advanced training under renowned Vidwan Anantha R. Krishnan.
Over the years, Srivatsan has performed extensively in Carnatic music concerts, arangaetrams, and Bharatanatyam productions, accompanying vocalists, instrumentalists, and dancers throughout the New England region. Outside of music, Srivatsan is pursuing a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), specializing in wireless communications and digital signal processing.
That personal investment and touch with the art has shaped how he hears the instrument. Feel, response, and tone are things he is personally connected to, and they remain the standard everything else is measured against.

On stage
Sri performs at concerts, community gatherings, and cultural programs across New England, accompanying both vocal and instrumental music. His playing centers on accompaniment: listening closely, supporting the ensemble, and serving the music.
He is available for any musical event requiring mridangam, konnakol, or unique percussion.

The repair side: Sri's Lab
Sri's Lab is a small, home-based service dedicated to the repair, maintenance, and restoration of mridangams. The goal is simple: make it easier for musicians to care for their instruments locally, without needing to delay repairs or depend entirely on overseas travel.
Sri's inspiration for repair work grows directly from playing. Caring about how an instrument feels, responds, and sounds led naturally toward learning how to maintain and restore one. The same ear that guides the playing guides the work at the bench.
While Sri is still early in his journey into mridangam repair, he approaches the task with care and curiosity. Sri's Lab reflects a player-first approach grounded in respect for the instrument, the music, and the needs of fellow musicians.
